Shift in Strategy: Apple Takes a Bite at Design Engineers

Recently the WSJ reported that Apple Inc has actively been recruiting engineers in order to design its own computer chips. Observers suggest this shift in strategy will allow Apple greater protection from competitors and flexibility in design for blockbuster products like the iPhone. While this move may come as no surprise to Apple loyalists, the larger question remains – will more device manufacturers follow suit? For the ailing global semiconductor industry (sales were down 30% year over year in March) the talent management and business implications are huge. Semiconductor firms now face a double threat of falling product demand and increased competition for talent within a key customer group.

To provide greater clarity into the human capital implications of shifts like these, Infohrm has partnered with Hewlett-Packard to form the Global Technology Consortium. The mission of the Global Technology Consortium is to build an industry-specific community of practitioners in human capital strategy, planning, measurement and reporting. The consortium’s focus is on developing and delivering back actionable insights and best practices from custom benchmarks to leading-edge research.
